The unveiling of Australia’s first Decathlon store in Sydney last year was welcomed with open arms by consumers seeking quality products at very, very low prices.

Offering goods for over 70 different sports, Decathlon’s Tempe warehouse can barely fit its range of gear.

Tents are going for as little as $40, running shoes from $22 and ski jackets from $39, you can see its obvious allure.

Better still, quality is at the heart of Decathlon’s mission.

Through intense in-house research, development and testing, the French sporting goods store chooses brands based on rigorous quality examinations.

“At Decathlon, we continuously try to lower our permanent prices,” the Decathlon website states. “We obsess every day to optimise our costs in order to offer you quality products at the lowest price to be able to make sports accessible to the many.”

Bargains aside, consumers are also excited about Decathlon’s operating hours: it opens at 5am and closes at midnight.

If you’re wondering who on earth is shopping for sporting goods at midnight, apparently it’s not uncommon!

According to Decathlon spokesperson, Danny Lavelle, Aussie customers are particularly keen on living and breathing sport 24/7.

“One night at 12[AM], the daily captain was closing, went outside and found a full five-on-five basketball game still happening,” Danny told Hussh. “Aussies love sport and there is no limit to their practice.”

The idea for such long hours came from the customers, who voted overwhelmingly in favour of operating outside the traditional 9 to 5 retail day.

“We asked sports users, our customers, to choose our opening hours because we believe they need access to sports products both before and after their sport,” Danny explained. “Their choice was this and we were happy to offer them such large opening hours.”

Decathlon’s Australian takeover is only beginning, with a further 80 stores planned nationwide.
