Hoping that the hype surrounding H&M would have died off by now, our fashion writer Rebecca Volpe, made her way to the fashion precinct to see what all the fuss was about.

With a skip in my step, I made my way down to Australia’s only H&M store right here in Melbourne.

I attempted to visit the store earlier in the month but when I saw the large line of people standing around the corner from GPO in the pouring rain waiting to get in, I figured it was best to come back.

A few weeks later and the craziness was no less. The line had disappeared (thank goodness) but that was only because everyone was already inside the store. There were people and clothes everywhere. And I mean everywhere. I didn’t know where to start.

Firstly, I was taken back by how utterly beautiful the GPO building is. Expanding over 5000 square meters with natural lighting and high ceilings, there sure was a lot of shopping ground for me to cover. I started roaming through the first floor and was impressed with the cheap prices. I even picked up an oversized white shirt for only $12.95. Cue: happy dance – it fits in perfectly with the rest of my wardrobe.

I continued wandering through the rest of the floors – there’s also a men’s, children’s, accessories and home wear section – and was pretty happy with what I found.

We’re all about awesome bargains here at MWS so I was excited to see a great range of on-trend pieces at affordable prices.

Here’s the low down on what you can expect:

  • Winter warmers including women’s beanies and scarves from $9.95.
  • Women’s jeans from $27.95.
  • Huge range of H&M sports gear including women’s sports bras from $19.95 and leggings from $49.95.
  • Lots of basics! I got a long-sleeve cotton tee for only $12.95.
  • Winter coats from $59.95.
  • Boys long sleeve tops from $9.95.
  • Girls’ jumpers from $16.95.
  • Men’s basic sweaters from $12.95.
  • Men’s casual sneakers from $19.95.
  • Accessories for home including decorate jars for $7.95 and candles for $6.95.

The only downfall was that it was still extremely busy (as expected when an international brand comes down under). The lines for the change rooms and registers went for miles and even though I liked being around crowds – this was just a bit too much. So unless you really cannot wait (I don’t blame you) then my advice is to stick it out for a couple more weeks.

There will still be great bargains when you get there.
