Where to Find the Best Vintage Stores & Op Shops in Newtown

Discover unique and glamorous bargains at our favourite vintage stores and op shops in Newtown.

Sydney’s inner west has long been home to artists and students looking for cultured living on a budget. Despite the spread of gentrification, it remains home to a few bargain retailers where the cool and trendy get their fill.

In a world where fast fashion reigns supreme, buying second-hand clothing is the perfect start to living sustainably. It also doesn’t hurt to save a few dollars on your wardrobe!

Op shopping can be hit and miss, and requires a lot of patience to search through the well-stuffed racks. However, the rewards and savings can be huge if you decide to dedicate a bit of time to the hunt.

Here’s where you can find some great second-hand and vintage clothes in Newtown:

Vinnies

The Vinnies on north King Street is a massive store, and will no doubt overwhelm you. With a high volume of donations, these racks of goods require a keen eye and a determined shopper. You will find women’s dresses from around $12, and shirts and skirts from $7.

The men’s section is markedly smaller than the women’s but, on the plus side, it’s easier to find what you want!

Newtown Vinnies also has a small section of homewares, children’s toys, books, furniture and accessories.

SWOP

You can swap, sell and buy clothes from SWOP on Enmore Rd. The relatively new store offers either cash or store credit for your vintage and in-season clothing, but with a strict no fast-fashion policy. It’s a great place to find gorgeous vintage clothes, with most items sitting between $25 and $35.

While it’s not exactly Vinnies prices, the curated and colourful selection of clothing makes it easy to shop ’til your heart’s content.

Cream on King

Cream on King is in the business of upcycling clothing. While it stocks some fab vintage finds, it really specialises in refashioning clothes out of old and recycled material.

You’ll find racks of skirts, shirts, shorts, overalls, jeans, jackets and dresses in similar styles and materials but with their own unique colours and patterns. This is the place to come for denim basics and quirky skirts and men’s casual shirts.

You can also complete your look with Cream on King’s range of men’s and women’s shoes and bags.

U-Turn

There are two U-Turn stores within walking distance of each other on King St: One is dedicated to vintage, the other to contemporary clothing. The vintage store appears to be the more popular – after all, its shiny, glam and quirky window displays are sure to lure you inside. The stock is great quality, but expect to pay an appropriate price tag for these one-of-a-kind designs.

U-Turn has several stores across Sydney, but they also have an online store for those who want to browse and buy their cool stock.

Red Cross

The Red Cross store on South King street is more expensive than your run-of-the-mill charity store. The small shop has a retro feel, with a mix of everyday wear, vintage and costume stock. Due to the typically neat racks and small store size, it’s less overwhelming than most charity stores.
